Let’s talk about how we actually build these halogen lamps. The goal is simple: we want a massive hit of shortwave infrared (SWIR) radiation. Instead of your typical resistive heater, we use a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz tube filled with halogen gas. This is the secret sauce. The gas keeps the filament from evaporating too quickly, which means it can run way hotter and pump out a lot more energy. Getting the power right When you’re picking a lamp, it all comes down to voltage and wattage. That’s what controls your heat flux. If you’re running a fast industrial line, you’ll want high-wattage tubes because they ramp up almost instantly. We usually wire these into high-voltage circuits. Why? It keeps the current draw low, so you don’t have to deal with chunky, oversized cables. Just a heads-up: make sure the wattage actually matches your heat load. If you cram too much power into a tiny space, you’re going to fry your lamp holders. The hardware side of things We use quartz glass because it doesn’t melt under pressure and lets IR radiation pass right through. For the connectors, we stick with R7s or Sk15. They’re standard, they’re easy to swap out, and they stay snug even when things get hot and the metal starts to expand. Some of our lamps also have special coatings. These shift the wavelength of the heat, which is handy if you need the heat to soak deeper into a material or bounce off a specific surface. Where this actually works (and what to watch for) You’ll see these lamps everywhere—PET blowing, curing paint, welding plastics. The best part? There’s no waiting around for them to warm up. They hit the target immediately. But here’s the thing: that kind of intensity comes with a catch. If your shielding isn’t spot on, that radiation will chew through nearby wiring or melt your plastic components. And please, don’t skimp on the cooling fans. You need to move the ambient heat away from the housing, or you’ll end up with burnt-out sockets. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
