
Let’s Talk Ruby Infrared Lamps
If you’ve ever wondered what makes a “ruby” lamp different from your standard heater, it really comes down to where the heat goes. We use a tungsten filament inside a high-purity quartz tube and mix in some halogen gas. The “ruby” part is basically a tweak to the coating or the gas blend. It shifts the light spectrum so the heat actually hits your material instead of just bouncing off.
Getting the Power Right
These things pack a punch. When you’re setting up a high-speed line, it’s all a balancing act between the length of the tube and the voltage. Here’s the trick: if you go with a shorter tube but keep the wattage high, you get a massive blast of heat in a small area. But you’ve got to make sure your power supply can handle that initial surge when you flip the switch. If your wiring is too thin, you’ll get voltage drops. That means one end of the lamp is scorching while the other is barely warm. Not ideal.
The Hardware Side of Things
The quartz tube is the real hero here. It lets the short-wave radiation fly right through without soaking it up. That way, the heat goes into your product, not the glass. For the connectors, we usually stick with R7s or SK15, depending on how much current you’re pulling. I always recommend R7s if you can. Why? Because when a tube eventually burns out, you can swap it in seconds. No need to tear apart the whole bank or mess with the wiring. And that halogen gas? It’s there to keep the tungsten from gunking up the inside of the glass. Without it, the tube would turn black and die in a few hundred hours.
Real-World Use (and the Risks)
You’ll mostly see these in PET blowing, plastic welding, or curing ovens. They react fast, which makes it easy to control the temperature in specific zones. But look, there’s a catch. These lamps getinsanely hot. If your cooling fans quit or your shielding is slightly off, you’re looking at melted components or a cracked tube from thermal shock. Also, a pro tip: keep your fingers off the glass. Oils and fingerprints create “hot spots” on the quartz, and that’s the fastest way to make a lamp shatter. Keep them clean, keep them cool, and they’ll treat you right.
