Getting the Most Out of Your Ruby Halogen Lamps
If you’re running PET bottle blowing machines, you know the struggle. You need the preform to hit that perfect glass transition temperature fast, but if you push too hard, you end up scorching the surface. It’s a fine line. That’s why we build our ruby halogen lamps the way we do. We use a quartz envelope doped with ruby powder to shift the heat spectrum. Instead of just blasting the surface, the heat actually penetrates the plastic. It’s the difference between searing the outside of a steak and cooking it through. The deal with power and voltage We usually spec these lamps with high wattage and tight voltage ratings. Why? Because we want a concentrated thermal footprint. High voltage lets us cram more power into the filament without needing a massive, clunky tube. This is how you get those rapid cycle times that keep your production moving. But here is the catch: your power supply has to be a perfect match. If you under-volt, you’ll get patchy, uneven heating. Over-volt it, and you’ll fry the filament in no time. It’s all about that balance. Why the ruby coating actually matters The red tint isn’t there to look pretty. It’s doing the heavy lifting by filtering wavelengths so the heat goes exactly where it needs to. Inside, we use a halogen gas fill to keep things running smooth. As the tungsten filament evaporates, the gas basically pushes that tungsten back to the center of the wire. It stops the glass from turning black and keeps your light output steady for thousands of hours. It just works. Fitting them in and avoiding the pitfalls We use standard R7s or SK15 connectors, so they should slide right into most industrial ovens without any fuss. They fit tight, which means you don’t have to worry about arcing. One thing to watch out for, though: these lamps put out a ton of heat. That puts a lot of pressure on your cooling fans. If your airflow is blocked or weak, that heat starts soaking back into the sockets and eating away at your wiring. Make sure your cooling system can handle the heat. Your wiring will thank you.
