The cool part? They use shortwave infrared. Instead of wasting time heating up all the air around the part, the heat just jumps straight into the workpiece. It’s direct, it’s fast, and it’s incredibly efficient.
Power and the “Cold Start” Headache
A 2500W rating is a lot of juice. When you’re wiring these in, remember that packing that much power into a small tube creates an intense heat zone. But here’s the thing: you’ve got to watch your power supply. When these lamps first kick on from a cold start, there’s a massive surge of current. If your voltage starts bouncing around, you’re going to fry the filament way sooner than you should. Keep it steady, and the lamp will treat you right.
Why Quartz and Halogen?
We house the tungsten filament in high-purity quartz glass. Inside, there’s halogen gas doing the heavy lifting. It stops the filament from evaporating and gunking up the inside of the tube. This keeps the glass crystal clear, so you get the same heat output on day 100 as you did on day one. Depending on what you’re heating, you can even get a coated version to bounce the heat back toward your target or filter out certain wavelengths.
The Trade-offs (Because nothing is perfect)
These lamps usually come with R7s or SK15 connectors, so they just slide right into your existing PET blowing machines or ovens. They hit target temperatures in seconds. It’s almost instant. But there is a catch. That much heat density puts a lot of stress on your gear. If your cooling system or housing isn’t up to the task, you’re asking for trouble. Under-spec your ventilation, and you’ll end up with warped reflectors or melted wiring. One last tip:**Keep your reflectors clean.**A little bit of dust might not seem like a big deal, but it creates hot spots that will kill your lamp faster than anything else.
